I was playing with my grandson last night at my daughter and son in laws house when I saw the picture of my dad. Bryson I said, "That's my daddy." He said, "Is he gone?" (Wonder how he knew?) I said, "yes." My daughter Emily said, "that's my grandpa and he's in heaven." Bryson asked if he was with Jesus. "Yes he is," Emily said. What surprised us was when Bryson who is four years old said,
"Do you miss him?"
Children's minds are such a mystery. We really don't know what they are thinking. One thing I know for sure is they are a whole lot smarter than any of us realize.

When Tracy, my oldest daughter, died at the age of 8, Layne, my youngest daughter, leaned down and hugged Trace in the casket. None of us thought anything of it. Not til 2 weeks later when she was standing next to me and she asked "Momma, why is Tracy mad at me?" I was dumbfounded. I said, No honey, Why do you think that? She replied: She didn't hug me.
I then explained that what she saw and hugged was just a Tracy doll because Tracy had already moved in with Jesus. Then she was ok. She was 2 1/2 at the time.
That is sweet. It's always amazing what they can come up with.
Their little minds are a mystery, I agree that whatever we think they know, they know a lot more than we think.
Kids do say things that can swell your heart. Once, when Mater was 5 or 6, we were on vacation in Hilton Head and were ridin back to the compound. He was riding shotgun. I said something, putting my self down and he popped me on the arm and said, 'PawPaw, you say stuff like that all the time, and it’s not true. You are the greatest man I know.'
Choked me up.
yeah i love kids for jsut this reason...
I'll bet your heart just melted. And yes, they are smarter than we give them credit. He seems to be in touch with his senses and those around him. That is so sweet.
Children are far more intuitive than we give them credit for.
That is so sweet. I'll bet you teared up. I know I would have.
Yes, they observe their elders and pick up so much more than we realize. It goes both ways, but when you see them learning about life and love, it's always so incredibly moving. Thanks for sharing this. :-)
I agree. They're absorbing and learning when we don't even know it's happening!
How sweet! Such empathy from the little one!
"Do you miss him?"... awww how cute.
Very sweet. And I'm betting that both you and his mom said yes, you miss him. Which affirms the little guy's sense of things, and teaches a life lesson in the best way possible...in response to a query he makes.
I had the same conversation with my 3 year old GD about my Mother. I said my Mom would love to see my GD and her 3 sisters. She says that is sad that she can't. I said...maybe she can see us from heaven. She said No, because God is holding us in his hand. She closed her fist tight. Guess it would be hard to see us if we were clamped in his hand. Her version of the song..."He's got the whole world in his hands".
I totally agree. I am amazed at the things that come out of Felicity's mouth. She knows so much more than I give her credit for.
They constantly amaze us with their insight. Precious little people they are:)
That's very sweet. Kids can be more sensitive than adults sometimes.

Compassion from a child can be felt more intensely I think than compassion offered from our friends. I have to say though, that compassionate little ones rarely come from insensitive adults. They feel so much... but they often have to live in a family where their sensitivity is fostered and allowed to be expressed. My guess your little guy's mom is kind of caring, too. Lovely post. It's so special for us to be reminded of how we've been touched so deeply too. Thank you so much.
What a precious boy...out of the mouth of babes...
That child is wise beyond his years.
Soooo sweet...Kids are so smart these days. How they know stuff like that amazes me! I don't think I was that inquizative at that age. I also think my parents shielded me from things that were supposedly painful.
Emily had a great response. Good for her!

Awe, what a sensitive sweetie he is. Give him a big hug and her too!
Those four year old questions can be the most difficult to answer because they are so straight forward. My father died when I was 7 months pregnant with my first child. I remember when he was little, he'd question me, and he was so probing and so insistent. It was cathartic, but also painful.
You're right, those little buggers are smarter than we give them credit for.
I couldn't agree more.
Oh I know! My 4 yr old surprises me all the time.
It would be so interesting to get into their heads sometimes - then, as they grow older, I'm kind of happy I can't!
Gayle, are you feeling better yet? I hope so!
Lisa
He sounds like a very insightful little boy.
Lovely blog! Lovely writing! Keep up the good work!
How sweet. I love the way they think.
