We Knew This Day Would Come

When we built our home in 1987 we knew this day would come.  The question was when.  We made it 23 years but unfortunately that day is here.  Earlier this year our trees were destroyed to move power lines. But not until they started the bridge did we fully realize the destruction.  Our peaceful country lifestyle is no more.  The interstate will soon be here and it's here forever.

Oh dear how close to your home is this construction? I moved from quiet and peaceful to near a highway -- took a bit to get used to. Wish it wasn't so but its not so bad -- especially when I need to go somewhere -- close to everything.

That soo stinks! I live on a busy little street and so wish I didnt have to hear the trucks. I can't even imagine an interstate. My heart breaks for you! =0(

oh that is sad! how close will the interstate be to your house? Will you hear it as the cars go by (when it is eventually built?) progress is nice but not if it is disruptive like this

Ouch. Not a good situation, for sure.

Oh that just makes my heart ache. We had something similar on a MUCH smaller scale...when we moved here it was all thick woods behind us and so quiet and nice. 2 years later, they put in a huge subdivision. They thankfully left a lot of trees on the lots though so the change wasn't so drastic....not near as much as yours. As a lover of nature and trees....its a shame and my heart goes out to you. Can you start planting a row of closely set trees on your property line to shield yourselves (noise as well as sight) right away? Spruce or fir trees, I guess, is what they use for that.

So sorry, Gayle. It's a sad day indeed. xo

Very sorry to hear that Gayle. Hugs to you.

oh what a shame. So how close are you to it then? I can't imagine what a difference that must make

Gayle, makes me wish that NC wasn't experiencing the major influx of transplants (I was one, myself, but that was 20 years ago before the big boom). Progress at what expense? So sorry.

Sorry to hear this Gayle! I know that "progress" must go on - but at what cost?

How horrid....those lovely trees....and I would have been sad too. Time to start working on sound proofing the house more.

So sad to see the trees go. I hope it ends up not being as bad as you fear once the construction is done.

OMG GAYLE! That's HORRIBLE! I wonder how long it will be until we get some of that. The HWY is coming just 2 miles from us now! Love Ya!

We live in a fairly quiet place, but the interstate is about a mile away, and when the wind comes from that direction, the sound of the cars and trucks is disruptive. Fortunately, the prevailing wind direction keeps that sound away. I never knew what a difference it made.

So sorry to hear about your changed environment, Gayle.

That sucks!

Maybe you can plant some more to block the view.

Yikes
that is so not cool
will you stay or move?

Engineers just can't stand to see a tree. They believe that a road or house or building or parking lot would look better there and be more productive. After all, trees only makes oxygen and become homes for critters. Sorry you are loosing your country setting.

Is that for the other belt loop around the city?

Ugh. So sorry. At least you had all those peaceful, quiet years.

I am thinking of moving right next door to a busy motorway (highway)...

As for you... I hope it isn't too close to your home.

I love trees and hate to see them cut down. My sister lives in Claremont, Ca and it is know as the City of Trees. They have old, old trees reaching to the sky over streets, houses, out of side walks and they take such care of them.

I am so sorry about the interstate. Progress is such a double edged sword...

My girls and I lived in a wonderful upstairs tree house for ten years. They put a freeway behind us and it was never the same. It changed the mood and peace of our home; it changed the long time residents with a much different type people. We no longer felt it was "home" and had to move...

Get those sound proof low E windows...hugs to you...

Changes certainly give us opportunities to find out what we are made of and what we are willing to live with. For us, we need as much quiet and peace as we can find. The building we live in is not as important as the location in a serene environment. For some people it is important to live near fun neighbors. I was like that when raising kids. I am sorry your home environment is in the process of major change. It will be interesting to see if you make changes because of it.

It's so sad to lose a mature tree. You are the second blogger this week to write about this happening in their beautiful town. The landscape will be changed forever :-(

Oh no! Is it very close?

So sorry to see the destruction that 'progress' is doing to your country side! Hope your house isn't close enough to 'see' the interstate from your house windows... That 'transformation' is very sad!

I agree with Matty.. May be you should block that view..
Progress comes with sacrifice.. or is this really progress

EnJoy your weekend!

Throw up a gas station!

Sorry about the loss of your peace and quiet...but maybe your property value will go up and you can sell for a nice tidy profit to aomeone who does want to throw up a gas station?

Wow, that seems to be moving quickly! Of course now that they've started, they won't waste any time. Just keep your eyes closed.

What a change..I bet it will be noisy too..I am sorry. Val has a great idea..plant trees now so they have a chance to grow into a sound barrier..I would do a row of evergreens and a row of the fastest growing Popular or "Aspen" that you can buy..they will grow three to four feet in a year:)

Bummer! I can imagine that the reality is much harder than you expected it to be... I'm so spoiled living "in the middle of no where." We think is a busy day if 100 cars pass our house!
